The Crane, 16 May 2025
What a fantastic week it’s been—and the next five weeks are shaping up to be just as exciting! We can’t wait for the Spring Concert tomorrow and Sports Day next Friday.
We’d also love to hear from you! When you are here on Saturday, please share your thoughts on what you value in high-quality teaching and learning at HIS by adding your ideas to the board in the Genkan. Feel free to write in any language you’re most comfortable with—your voice matters!
Stay tuned for all the fun ahead! We had a wonderful Principal for a Day – Raphael!
Principal Raphael
After being Principal for the day, I have been able to make some school decisions. When I found out I would be principal, I felt excited and throughout the day I felt nervous but happy. First thing this morning I had a coffee morning with Ms. Lara and I had to sign some important papers. I then had a meeting to discuss the playground with the PTA and we shared some great ideas. Thank you to everybody for another great week at HIS!
Primary
What a vibrant and exciting week it has been at HIS!
Our EC/KG and Grade 1/2 students had a fantastic adventure at the ropes course earlier in the week. It was a joy to see them demonstrating courage as they tackled the heights, and showing patience and cooperation during their break times. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and it was clear they had a wonderful time exploring and challenging themselves in the great outdoors.
On Thursday, our Primary students represented HIS at the soccer tournament in Kobe. Their sportsmanship, determination, and team spirit were outstanding. A huge thank you to Mr. Chris and Mr. B for their coaching and support—these opportunities wouldn’t be possible without your dedication.
Looking ahead to Saturday, our Grade 5 students will be presenting their PYP Exhibition. We know there may be some nerves, but also a lot of excitement, and we’re incredibly proud of all the hard work they’ve put in. We hope many of you will come by to support and celebrate their learning journeys.
Saturday also brings Student-Led Conferences across the Primary years. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to gain deeper insight into their child’s learning and growth. We’re sure you’ll be impressed by the reflection and ownership shown by our young learners.
To top off the day, our Spring Concert will take place in the afternoon. Everyone has been diligently preparing, and the performances promise to be a real treat. We look forward to seeing many of you there to enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music.
Thank you to all students, teachers, and families for another great week at HIS!
The singing continues!
It’s that time of year again — HIS IDOL 2025 is officially kicking off!
Are you ready to shine, dazzle, and show the world what you’ve got? Whether you sing, dance, act, juggle, do magic, or have a unique talent we’ve never seen before, this is your moment!
Auditions will be held from May 23 to June 3, leading up to the grand finale: The HIS IDOL Final Show on June 15 at the International House.
Why join HIS IDOL?
Participating in a talent show helps students build confidence, express their creativity, develop courage, and experience the joy of performing in front of a supportive audience. Plus, it’s fun!
Want to be part of the show?
Fill out this form (PYP, Secondary) by Monday, May 19 to audition.
Each performance must be a maximum of 5 minutes, and only one performance entry is allowed per person.
We can’t wait to see the amazing talent our HIS stars bring to the stage this year!
Counselor’s Corner Update
To close out our Social Emotional Learning this year, students in Grades 3–10 will be watching Inside Out 1 (Grades 3–6) and Inside Out 2 (Grades 7–10) during their final SEE classes. These films are a fun and meaningful way to explore themes like emotional awareness, self-motivation, identity, and change—all central to what we’ve been working on in SEL this year.
To spark curiosity and prepare your child for these films, here are some conversation starters you can explore at home:
What do you think your “Emotion Headquarters” looks like inside your mind?
If your emotions were characters, what would they be like?
Do you think emotions help or get in the way when we’re making decisions?
What changes do you imagine happen to our emotions as we grow up?
These questions set the stage for students to watch the films with curiosity and self-awareness, and make connections to their own emotional experiences. We’re excited to wrap up the year with meaningful reflection and hope you’ll continue the conversation at home.

Today, an email was sent to all parents about upgrading our playground with new climbing equipment. If you did not receive the email or have questions, please reach out to us through the PTA email address.
Tomorrow is the Spring Concert! We are looking forward to seeing the students show off their musical skills. Thank you, Takako Sensei, for all your hard work. Please celebrate after the concert with ice cream! If your student cannot attend, let us know and we will set some aside.
Next Friday, May 23, is Sports Day. The PTA will have a small stand set up, so if you would like your student to purchase a drink or other item, please send them with money.
The teacher appreciation lunch is coming! This is a chance to thank our wonderful teachers and staff. If you would like to help by providing food or assisting during lunch, please sign up (see Toddle).
Thank you to all volunteers who continuously support this school and help create a wonderful environment for our students. With only five weeks of school left, we are looking for people interested in leadership volunteer roles by joining the PTA next year.
