Student Support at Hiroshima International School

Hiroshima International School is committed to supporting the growth, well-being, and success of every student. We believe students thrive when they feel safe, valued, and understood, and our support systems are designed to ensure each child has what they need to learn with confidence and purpose. Our approach reflects the PEACE values and the IB philosophy of developing balanced, caring, and reflective learners.

Our Approach

Student support at HIS is holistic. We look at each learner as a whole person, including their academic, social, emotional, and personal development. Through close collaboration among teachers, specialists, families, and students, we create an environment where every child can access high-quality learning and feel a strong sense of belonging.

Counseling and Well-being

Our school counselor provides support across EC to Grade 12. Services include:

Individual and small group counselling

Social and emotional learning support

Learning Support

Our Learning Support Team helps students who benefit from additional academic assistance or accommodations. Support may include:

  • Differentiated instruction within the classroom
  • Targeted small group or individual sessions
  • Learning plans tailored to student strengths and needs
  • Collaboration with parents and outside specialists
  • Support for executive functioning, study skills, and organization

We aim to provide the least intrusive level of support while ensuring students have access to the curriculum and opportunities to succeed.

English Language Learning (ELL)

For students who are developing proficiency in English, we offer ELL support that focuses on building language skills needed for success in an international school. This may involve:

  • Small group instruction focused on reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • In-class language support
  • Collaboration with teachers to integrate language development across subjects

Our goal is to help students engage fully with school life while celebrating their linguistic identities.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL is integrated throughout HIS and supports students in developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, resilience, and positive relationships. Teachers, counselors, and coordinators work together to create a caring culture where students practice these skills daily.

Safeguarding and Child Protection

HIS is dedicated to maintaining a safe learning environment. We follow clear safeguarding policies and procedures that align with international standards. All staff receive regular training and take an active role in ensuring student safety and well-being. Families can find our Child Protection Policy in the Policy Handbook or request it from the office

Collaboration with Families

We believe strong partnerships with families support student success. We communicate openly with parents, include them in planning and decision-making, and provide guidance on how to help children at home. Regular check-ins, parent coffees, and progress updates keep families informed and connected.

Transitions and Belonging

Whether a student is joining HIS for the first time, moving between divisions, or preparing to leave Japan, we provide support for smooth transitions. Our aim is to ensure every student feels welcomed, connected, and confident during times of change.

Student Leadership and Advocacy

Students are encouraged to take an active role in shaping their learning. Through student voice groups, peer leadership opportunities, and collaboration with teachers, students learn to advocate for themselves and contribute to the school community.

Accessing Support

If you think your child may benefit from counseling, learning support, or ELL services, please contact the classroom teacher or the Student Support Team. Together, we will determine the best next steps and ensure appropriate support is provided.
