Happy PTSC!

Thank you for joining us for our conference. Collaboration between school and home is key to student success. Our secondary students are eagerly anticipating the upcoming camp trip – don’t forget to pack your tents and hiking gear.

This weekend, our boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams are competing in a tournament. Good luck to all our athletes. A big thank you to Masayo-sensei and Mr. B for their dedication.

Halloween festivities are just around the corner – do you have your costume ready?

Reading Matters

Did you know:

  • Children who read 20 minutes a day, five days a week, are exposed to 1.8 million words per school year. Students reading five minutes per day are exposed to 282,000 words per year.
  • Reading helps foster empathy, as children experience “walking in someone else’s shoes.”
  • Children are exposed to different ideas and cultures.
  • Reading improves critical thinking.
  • Reading enhances grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills.
  • Students who read 20 minutes per day score higher on standardized reading tests.
  • Reading independently or with your child before bed can help them relax and wind down.

Tips to support reading at home:

  • Listen to your child read daily.
  • Read to your child daily.
  • Role model reading as an adult.
  • Discuss the benefits of reading.
  • Explore unfamiliar words: meanings, synonyms, antonyms.
  • Ask your child to recap events (who, what, where, when, why, how).
  • Discuss characters’ feelings and motivations.
  • Make connections between books and your child’s own experiences.
