Principal’s Message
Dear HIS Families
I hope you have been enjoying the week. We will be holding a Parent Workshop on 1 April looking at the idea of a growth mindset. The basic idea behind a growth mindset is that we see ourselves as developing learners, a view that treats intelligence, in all its forms, as malleable. In short, we replace the idea that ‘I am not very good at something’ with the idea that ‘I am not very good at something, yet‘. It is an empowering message that challenges many negative self-perceptions.
Related to this idea is an area that we should all be concerned about which is the unrealistic and unhealthy expectations that children are exposed to through various media which make them feel they need to be ‘perfect’. This, of course, is not new, but the effects are magnified through social media. Thomas Curren has some great advice for parents and schools in this TED Talk and I love the comment that we need to ‘create a culture that celebrates the joys of imperfection’.
I am spending the weekend in Bangkok at a series of IB workshops for the Primary Years Program (PYP) and the Middle Years Program (MYP). One of the workshop leaders was discussing role-modelling in society and is investigating the phenomenon of children who spend such extended periods of time on the internet that the role-modelling function that a parent or caregiver would normally fulfil is taken over by the Internet. The results of this, as you can imagine, are not great for the child. The increased incidence of ‘perfectionism’ through increasing exposure to unrealistic expectations on social media is one of the outcomes so there is a lot to think about as a parent when controlling screentime. For this reason, I thought that this TED Talk may be of interest so please enjoy and I hope you have a perfectly imperfect weekend.
Regards
