What a fantastic week it’s been! Our students are currently engaged in insightful self-reflections on their first semester, a valuable process for growth and learning. We have much to anticipate and celebrate as we look ahead to an exciting second semester.
Today’s assembly was a delightful showcase of talent and teamwork, especially the wonderful presentation by our first-grade students! Their enthusiasm and creativity were truly inspiring.
I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Hoshi Hinten for her invaluable contributions during her internship with our Grade 1/2 classes. Her dedication and positive energy have been a wonderful asset to our learning community. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
Parent Coffee- Wednesday, January 22nd – 8:45am-10:00am
Happy new year HIS families!
Many of us look at the upcoming year and set goals for ourselves. Perhaps you or your children would like to improve your language skills. Luckily, our English and Japanese language teachers have prepared a Coffee Morning for HIS parents showcasing some useful tools, websites and apps for improving English and Japanese language skills.
Please join us in the HIS library on Wednesday January 22 from 8:45-10:15a.m. to try these informative resources for yourself. Thank you in advance for your involvement as well as those parents who answered our survey asking for your ideas in September.
See you next week!
Counselor’s Corner Update! 🌟
This week, we began diving into Responsible Decision-Making, an essential skill for personal growth and for developing principled individuals.
In the PYP, students started exploring how to reflect on problems or challenges and think about the various options they can choose to respond with. We discussed how important it is to consider both the short- and long-term consequences of their choices. To keep the conversation going at home, PYP parents can watch this engaging video with your children: The Right Choice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdsCUExLE-Y
You can also practice decision-making steps together by encouraging your child to think about possible choices and their consequences before making decisions.
For the MYP, students initiated thoughtful discussions about the decision-making process and will be diving deeper into analyzing decisions made by fictional characters. To spark meaningful conversations at home, parents can watch this inspiring TED Talk with your teens:
Ruth Chang: How to Make Hard Choices
https://www.ted.com/talks/ruth_chang_how_to_make_hard_choices
Use this opportunity to discuss how values and perspectives shape decisions in our lives.
We’re thrilled to see how our students are growing into thoughtful, reflective decision-makers! 💛✨
Conduct at-home science experiments
There are plenty of simple and engaging science experiments you can conduct from the comfort of home! For activities related to the season, consider these ideas:
- Explore the science behind ice melting
- Create your own snowstorm in a jar
- Learn about condensation and frost
- Observe how the volume of snow changes once it melts into water
- Make fake snow out of baking soda and shaving cream
- Experiment with dissolving hot cocoa powder in different temperatures of water

PTA Wolfpack
It has been another great week here at HIS. Just a few reminders as we head into the weekend.
There is a boys basketball game on Wednesday, January 22nd. Please come out to support if you are able!
Our PTA snack shop this month will be on January 30 and 31. Next month, we are planning a special one for Valentine’s Day! We will be sharing details soon.
International Festival is coming! This year’s festival planning is already underway. We will soon be looking for ideas, volunteers, and raffle item donations. This is a great way to be involved with not only our community, but the larger community here in Hiroshima. We will be sharing more details about ways you can help at our general meeting next month.
We look forward to working with you!
