The Crane 3 February 2017

1. Principal’s Message

Dear HIS Families

I hope you enjoyed your week. If you are reading this, I would like to say, thank you. The Crane is our main form of communication with HIS families. I have been told on many occasions that ‘people don’t read the Crane’ and although this is an issue in many schools, I would ask you to help us out by encouraging others to follow your good example and take the time to look over this newsletter one a week. Thank you.

I am in Hong Kong this weekend delivering an IB workshop on creating inclusive classrooms to a group of teachers from a range of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The IB has a great system of bringing teachers together for ongoing professional development and being here is a great reminder of the rich diversity of the community of IB schools around the world. Have a great weekend.

Kind regards

Damian Rentoule (Principal)

Mr B traveled to Karuizawa last weekend to represent Hiroshima Prefecture at the Japan Winter Games and had lots of fun on the ice, it seems. Congratulations on this great achievement.

This form (link) will be opened for selections on Tuesday January 31st at 6pm and will close on Friday February 3rd at 1pm.

Once we have collected the information on students club selections, we will look at the scheduling of after school buses. We will communicate this to you as soon as we know the details.

Please also think about how you might be able to offer your skills and support: how about making a ‘guest chef’ appearance at the cooking club?  Please contact the PTA to volunteer your services or just let me know.    If we are unable to find volunteers, unfortunately, cooking club will be cancelled.

If you have any questions, comments or services to offer,  please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

4. February 11 – Parent workshops

   a. Supporting English Language Learning for Secondary students

  • 10:00am-11:00am

Explore some ways that we support English language learning in the secondary school as well as some ways to support your child at home. All parents are welcome.

   b. MYP Personal Project Workshop

  • 11:00am-12:00pm

At the end of the MYP, in Grade 10, students undertake a significant independent project called the Personal Project. Find out what this is all about and how you can support your child on their journey. All parents are welcome.

   c. Strategic Planning ‘Where do we want to be in 10-15 years?’

  • 1:00pm-3:00pm

By strategic planning, we mean defining where we want HIS to be in the future and making a plan to get us there.  Over the next six months, we are going to continue to review our priorities for where we, as a school, want to be in the future, 10-15 years from now.

On Saturday, February 11 (1:00pm – 3:00pm) we will hold a Strategic Planning Workshop where you will have an opportunity to help in this process. We will brainstorm ideas and work in groups to discuss potential future directions for HIS. Hope to see you there. All members of the school community are welcome to come along and add your voice.
